Tony Berlant is a Californi a artist known for his collages and assemblages composed of colored metal pieces that have been nailed together to form a single image. He uses discarded metal and tin scraps, from cookie tins to TV trays. Berlant was born in New York City in 1941 but moved to California at a young age. He studied at the University of Southern California for one year in 1959. He then attended the University of California, Los Angeles, from which he graduated with a Master’s. His work is collected by numerous prestigious institutions throughout the United States including: Art Institute of Chicago, Smithsonian Institute, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum and Yale University. His commissions are on display at The Mayo Clinic, 20th Century Fox Film Corporations, The Contemporary Museum in Hawaii, and Faret Tachikawa Art Park in Tokyo, to name but a few.
